People who are in construction and project management can relate when I say that we do not have time even for ourselves. Whatever free time we have, we want to spend with our family. As a citizen, a born and breed Singaporean, our core duty is to provide for our family and we have already paid our dues with 2 years of our lives. At this phase of our life, we need to contribute to our local economy and society.
We are already done our part. Let those who signed on to the military do theirs. In the modern world, many realised that war is a choice. To destroy a country, you do not need guns and bombs. Just destroy the economy of the country, sit back and watch the country destroy itself. That is what mordern warfare is about.
I am an exercise nut and find myself doing intensive calisthenics and weight training every other day. IPPT has never been a problem...But what if I wanted to forego my routine in favor of spending more time improving myself for my job, keeping my loved ones company or just doing whatever else I want.
Just like I have the choice to exercise I want the choice to not do anything about it instead of being penalized by having to do RT. All of us working understand how precious even 30 mins of free time on a week day and weekend is, and we have our plate full dealing with escalating costs of living and finding time to live a happy full filing life. And don't even get me started on ICT.
Mandatory 2 year Conscription and ICT worked before to help us as a society but is doing jack shit to help us in today's context in this ultra competitive, ever changing global economy. Going into tertiary education or the working world 2 years late has a huge impact. NS has its merits but it's implementation is out dated. Stop forcing redundant crap down or throats .
