HDB discriminates against single parents who already struggle to make ends meet

Dear The Real Singapore,

I want to highlight this issue about the fact that the government and HDB discriminate against single parents.

I am currently in a difficult situation and I can't afford to buy a flat. I am the sole breadwinner and earn only a low income. I have to support my young son but I am receiving no help from the government.

I recently tried to apply for a HDB rental flat as I need a proper place to stay with my son but when I emailed them about it, this is the reply that I received from them (see above picture).

They explained that my son and I don't qualify as a "family" because it's not the government's perfect idea of a family as a mother, father and children.

This policy discriminates against single parents who are arguably in need of more help than "proper" families where there are two adults able to have an income each.

Their criteria are too strict and there is no room for leeway.

I guess this is a part of Singapore's "help" for single mums.
